I would be inclined to go to an alternator if you are thinking of H4's or
any other Halogen lights. An alternator will charge at a lower rpm. Of
coarse, just going to an alternator may overcome your dim lights at idle,
but the Halogen lights would give you a brighter light at all times. (I'm
running the H4's with an alternator, but I don't know if these lights are
legal stateside.)

obtw It NEVER hurts to upgrade your 40 year old wiring!
