Touching a Quartz Halogen or Quartz Iodine bulb does leave a film of oil on
the glass. This will burn into the glass because of the high heat of these
types of bulbs. If you wipe the bulb with alcohol after, you remove any
residue. This applies to all Halogen bulbs, headlights, taillights, etc. I
worked with these lamps for years. They can put out up to 3 times the light
of incandescent, but must be handled carefully.
As Jeff said, I would be reluctant to install Halogen taillights in a Met,
because of the heat. The only exception I MIGHT make would be for brake
lights. These MAY not be on long enough to cause a problem, but . . .
