different speedo help
It's obvious that spring is here by all of the people who are taking
their mets out again. Well, I got my fluid problems under control, but
of course I found a new problem. When I received the car the speedo was
disconnected at the dashboard so yesterday I reconnected it. It worked
ok for about ten miles then showed me the reason that it had been
disconnected. Starting at 0 the speedo began to move up fitfully, but
when I reached speed it continued to go up to a reading of about 70 mph
where it stopped. I then disconnected it again, but the needle remained
at 70. I reconnected the speedo and backed up and the speedo gradually
returned to 0. If I went forward the speedo went up, backwards down. I
reset the speedo at 0 and disconnected. From this experience I assume
that the problem is internal to the speedometer. (ie a frozen gear, or
weak spring?). By the way, the odometer seems to be working.
Is there any way to get into the speedo mechanism to clean and lubricate
(or possibly replace) parts without removing the entire unit? If I
must remove the unit. can someone please tell me the easiest and safest
way to do the job. I am not interested in accuracy, I would just like
some indication of approximate speed so that I know what I'm doing.
I ordered a tailpipe from kip on friday to use with a napa muffler that
came with the car. Is there any special problems in doing this exhaust,
and can I use off the shelf universal hangers if mine are broken?
Thanks Howard
