Hi Lynn, Do not cut the gasket. I've never done it myself but several people 
on the list have and I'm sure you don't cut it. The tech manual appears to do 
a good job of explaining how it's done. If you don't have one order it from 
Spencer Lewis at 1-888 MET PARTS.
