Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 14:06:36 -0700 (PDT) The little knob that has to do with starting the car, is the starter. This perplexed me a bit too, although the person I bought my car from showed me how to work things. It helped that my Dad remembers all the older cars he drove in his youth. Anywoo, to start your Met, follow these simple instructions. Put the key in the ignition. Turn it to the right. Make sure however that the entire ignition knob does not rotate. Hang on to it if nessacary (sp?). The rest of the knob is for the head lights and parking lights. So, just make sure that you aren't turning on the lights everytime you start your car. You just might leave them on some day when you didn't know they were on and drain the battery. Just just be aware of what is turning. Okay, so now you've turned the key. Nothing happens, the engine is not cranking, don't worry. Two red lights should be on on the speedometer. A low oil pressure light and a no charge light. Now pull the choke out some. It depends on how much choke you give the car relative to when it was last driven, or if the engine is warm. For cold starting, pull the choke most of the way out. Just experiment with the choke, it is not an exact science. Listen to your car, it will tell you how much or how little choke it needs. Okay, so you've choked the car and the key is turned, two red lights are on too. Next step, pump the gas. Just depress the accelorator a few times. If however, the car has not been driven in awhile, several days, do this: Pop the hood, standing in front of the car, facing the windsheild, there should be a manual primer thinggy on the right side of the engine. This is in front of the air cleaner, right about at the middle of the engine block. You'll know it when you find it because it is a thin metal rod with a loop on the end. The only thing that you can really pull on. Pull upwards a few times on this. This just pumps the gas up into the engine. On my car there is a clear bulb in the fuel line which allows me to see the gas pumping when I pull the manual primer thinggy. Alright, so there should be gas up to the engine, key's turned, engine choked, you should be ready to go. Make sure either the clutch is down or the car is not in gear. :-) Now, that mysterious knob that has to do with starting. Pull out on it. The engine should turn over. With luck, your car will start. If not, pull it again, give her a little gas, you get the picture. Good luck! Matt Birchard Portland, Oregon USA e-mail: psu05992@odin.cc.pdx.edu
