Well, in the case of a '56 car.  Aside from looking up the VIN, there are 
very obvious styling changes which occurred in '56.  Cars made in '54 or 
'55 do not have the side chrome strip, nor the "egg crate" grill of cars 
made from '56 on.  So, check the grill, if it has the "propellor" grill, 
the car would not be considered a '56 model, except of course unless it 
was first registered in '56.  If this is the case, call it what you like, 
though it was made before '56.  All of this information about grills and 
such assumes that the car has not been modified, as I know that people do 
swap grills and such on different vintages of Mets.  Anyway, there you go.
