Ê Mesoamerican Icon Collection The following icons depict artifacts from the ancient cultures that occupied areas of Mexico and Central America over 4,000 years ago. The oldest of these cultures is the Olmec, who lived in the area from 1200 BC to 400 BC. The most curious artifacts left by the Olmecs are large, stone carvings (over 7 feet in height) depicting human faces. The Mayan culture existed for over 3000 years, the height of its culture diversity beginning in approximately 250 AD and lasting to 900 AD. Like the Aztec, the Mayans were conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century. The Toltecs (100 AD - 1200 AD) held a vast empire with several urban centers, the most impressive of these being the city of Teotihuacan. The Aztec believed the Toltecs to be gods after seeing this city. The Aztec Empire (1250 AD - 1521 AD), while vast and powerful, was eventually dismantled after the Spanish conquests of the 16th century; destroyed through war and disease brought by the Europeans.
