What Will Happen to Programmers in the Future

We have entered the age of technology, and while programming was once considered a “geek activity” in the 60s and 70s, it has now become one of the most commendable and high-income jobs one can have. That’s great news, but are programmers more vulnerable to losing their jobs than everyone else? In this article, we ask the question, “Will programmers still have jobs in the future?”

WILL PROGRAMMERS HAVE JOBS IN THE FUTURE?

According to EDC, there are 23 million application developers in the world. By 2023, that number is expected to rise to 27.7 million. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 2016 and 2026, the number of software engineers is expected to increase at a rate of 24 percent – much faster than any other job in the country. One would assume that there is nothing to worry about when looking at these numbers.

However, some are concerned that programming is at risk of becoming obsolete. The argument is that of automation and AI: what if AI can program itself or other things? What if we can automate much of the code that developers do? In a way, the concern is understandable. We need only look at companies like Wix and SquareSpace, which allow anyone to design and “build” a website without having to know HTML and CSS. That’s right – if you want to build a website in-house, on your own, you can do it.
